Many people think of global health in a clinical context. We see it as much more. Solving a big problem, like disease control and prevention in a resource poor setting, seems overwhelming unless you break it down into its smallest components. When you do, you will discover that everybody has a piece of the puzzle.
A few years ago, I joined a team concerned with doing something for children with disabilities in a resource poor nation. Our team of educators and professionals visited, researched the problem, considered how we could make the biggest impact given our limited resources, and went to work. The first step was finding a partner on the ground.
Long story short, we ended up far from where we started. Some of the puzzle pieces were very different from what we expected and involved a lot of people who had no medical background whatsoever.
Whether you are a student, an educator, a professional, an artist, or just someone who wants to make a difference in the world, you are part of the global health jigsaw. You hold a crucial piece.
