Learning in Community: The lessons you cannot teach

Imagine spending a hot August day, the temperature close to 100 F, trudging along the street, wiping the sweat from your forehead, feeling it drip down your back. Your feet hurt, but you can't complain. The person beside you is homeless. He lives on the street. He is incredibly knowledgeable, funny, personable... not at all what you thought a homeless man would be like.

Imagine spending the day in a food shelf, talking to people who can't buy groceries and are visiting the shelf, taking handouts, for the first time in their life. Or maybe you are writing to someone incarcerated because of a terrible mistake.

These are all examples of learning in community. Participants learn from the community while, maybe helping the community, and from each other as they share their insights. The community. This type of learning can occur in many different settings- you pick. Like any other learning environment, there are considerations, both the usual (such as learning objectives and assessment) and some unique considerations:

  • Safety

  • Logistics

  • Ethics

  • Accountability

  • Partnerships

One extreme example of learning in community is global education. We're going to be hosting a webinar in the near future. Stay tuned.
